Radon Testing

Fortunately, testing for radon is easy and inexpensive. Our goal is for each structure to be as safe as possible for its occupants, whether our services are used or not! That’s why we have detailed the different options below, including extremely low-cost DIY home testing. Please note that for a real estate transaction, professional testing must be done.

DIY Home Testing

If you would like to test your home yourself and it is NOT in a real estate transaction, we recommend visiting your county extension office. Most kits cost about $20. Sedgwick County residents may call (316) 660-0100 to ask about availability or visit the office at 7001 W. 21st Street N.

Professional & Real Estate Transaction Testing

If you need to have a residential home or commercial building professionally tested, please complete the online form to pay for and schedule a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) test, which is the only device approved for a single test in a real estate transaction. This testing procedure comes with a full computer printout of test results in one-hour increments (view sample test result). Please note that this will consist of two short appointments 48 hours apart.

Starting at $125*, plus extra outside Wichita
*Tiered discounts available for home inspectors.

Radon Mitigation

If your residential home or commercial building has indoor radon readings of 4.0pCi/L or greater, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a radon mitigation system. The most popular and usually the most reliable method of reducing radon in structures is Active Soil Depressurization (also knowns as sub-slab ventilation), which Radon Services of Kansas is highly experienced in utilizing. Complete the online form to get a radon mitigation quote.

How Our Mitigation Works
  • A suction pipe is inserted through the floor slab into the gravel or soil underneath the structure.
  • This vent pipe rises from the suction point and leads to the exterior, where the radon is vented to the atmosphere to dissipate harmlessly.
  • The vent pipe has an inline fan installed that produces suction under the floor slab, thereby greatly reducing radon levels in the structure. A single fan will typically reduce the radon levels in the structure by 80 to 99 percent.

    What is radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that enters the home through the soil. High levels with long-term exposure may cause lung cancer.

    Why is radon dangerous?

As a Class A carcinogen, breathing high concentrations of radon can cause lung cancer. Thus, radon is considered a significant contaminant that affects indoor air quality worldwide. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer (after cigarette smoking), causing 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States.

    Is radon exposure common?

Approximately one in four homes have elevated levels of dangerous radon gas, which can vary from home-to-home, even within the same neighborhood.

How could radon get into my home?

Radon gas seeps through the soil beneath your home and through crawl spaces, cracks in your foundation or from the sump pit and gets trapped in your home where your family breathes the harmful gas day and night.

Where should I do a radon test in my home?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that test device(s) be placed in the lowest level of the home that could be used regularly, whether it is finished or unfinished. Conduct the test in any space that could be used as a bedroom, play area, family room, den, exercise room or workshop. Do not test in a closet, stairway, hallway, crawl space or in an enclosed area of high humidity or high air velocity. An enclosed area may include a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room or furnace room.

What if I need a radon test for a real estate transaction?

If you are doing your testing as part of a real estate transaction, PLEASE check with your home inspector for your testing needs. If your home inspector is not a certified radon tester, then we can and will perform your test with a full computer printout for closing.

Do your radon mitigation systems alter the functionality of the sump pump(s)?

No. Rest assured that nothing we do to mitigate radiation will affect the functionality of the sump pump(s).

How do I choose the best company to install a radon mitigation system?

We urge you to be aware of the risks associated with hiring just any company for radon mitigation system installation. Always make sure:

    • The company is properly insured and certified to install radon mitigation systems.
    • They will be installing quality fans and components.
    • They will be leaving you with some type of test to check that the radon mitigation system is effectively lowering radon after it is installed.

My basement is flooding—what should I do?

Since nothing Radon Services of Kansas does affects the functionality of the sump pump(s), any water backup issues should be addressed by a plumber.

They were very professional and were able to take the radon levels from 23.4 to 0.7! I couldn't have asked for a better radon mitigation system install.

The closing of my home was delayed due to a high radon reading. Radon Services of Kansas drove an hour to my home, gave me an estimate and were able to install the radon mitigation unit in less than a week, so I could close on my house. Larry and his co-workers were very professional and great to work with!
